Effective Voltage Calculator

About Effective Voltage Calculator (Formula)

The Effective Voltage Calculator calculates the effective voltage (also known as RMS or root mean square voltage) from the peak voltage. The formula used for this calculation is:

Effective Voltage (Veff) = Peak Voltage (Vp) / √2

Where:

  • Veff is the effective voltage, usually expressed in volts (V).
  • Vp is the peak voltage, also expressed in volts (V).
  • √2 represents the square root of 2, approximately equal to 1.4142.

The purpose of calculating the effective voltage is to find the equivalent constant voltage that would produce the same heating or power dissipation effect as the varying (peak) voltage in an AC (alternating current) electrical circuit. This is especially important in AC circuits because AC voltage varies over time, and using the effective voltage helps in making calculations for power, current, and other electrical parameters more consistent with those of DC (direct current) circuits.
